Ingredients for Tomato Pasta Sauce with Herbs

    • 1 small onion
    • 2 cloves garlic
    • 1 tablespoon sunflower oil
    • 3 tablespoon tomato puree
    • 500g passata
    • 200g tinned chopped plum tomatoes
    • 40g soft brown sugar
    • 1 lemon (juiced)
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ½ teaspoon black pepper
    • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 2 tsps onion powder
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 2 tsps dried basil
    • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
    • 2 tablespoon olive oil

How to Make Tomato Pasta Sauce with Herbs

    1. Chop the onion and garlic into slices and preheat a saucepan on a low heat. Add the sunflower oil then add the chopped onion and garlic to the pan. Sauté on a low heat until the onions and garlic are slightly brown.

    2. Add the tomato puree and stir until combined. Pour in the passata and the chopped plum tomatoes and continue to stir gently. Add the brown sugar and lemon juice and stir until the sugar dissolves. Add the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, dried basil, soy sauce and olive oil then stir until combined. Leave to simmer for 10 minutes and serve.

    Recipe Tips

    • Any type of oil can be used in place of sunflower oil.
    • This pasta sauce recipe uses dried oregano and dried basil but you can use fresh if you prefer.
    • If you’re adding the sauce to meat then prepare the sauce first and set aside until you have browned the meat. You can then pour the sauce over the meat and leave the meat to simmer until cooked.
    • You can prepare the sauce in advance, allow to cool and refrigerate until needed.
