Making oat bars or granola bars seems easy but it can be tricky to get the right quantity of ingredients to ensure they hold together. This oat bars hold together very well but you do have to ensure the ingredients are measured correctly. They are held together with a combination of golden syrup and sugar. During baking the sugar will caramelise which should hold the bars together.

Ingredients for Crunchy 4 Ingredient Oat bars
- 120g unsalted butter – I use unsalted butter but you can use slightly salted if you prefer.
- 45g golden syrup – or you can also use honey.
- 70g caster sugar – you can also use soft brown sugar instead if you prefer.
- 200g whole oats – I use unprocessed whole oats.
How to Make Crunchy 4 Ingredient Oat bars
1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 4/350oF/180oC. Grease and line a baking tin with parchment paper. For this recipe, I ususally use a tin that measures 27 x 20cm (10 x 8 inches) but you can also use a baking tin that measures 20 x 20 cm (8 x 8 inch). Allow the parchment paper to overhang on two opposite sides to help removing them from the tin easier.
2. Add the butter to a microwavable bowl and microwave in 40 second increments until fully melted. Remove from the microwave and immediately mix in the golden syrup and caster sugar. Combine well then fold in the oats ensuring all the oats are fully coated with the butter mix. As you’re folding in the oats use your spatula or spoon and crush the oats into the mixture. You don’t have to fully crush the oats.
3. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking tin and press down with the back of a spoon. Ensure it is tight and well compact. Bake in the centre of the oven for 25 minutes. It should be golden brown when done.
4. Allow to cool for 20 minutes then score the top of the bars where you want to cut them. This makes them easier to cut once cooled. Allow them to cool then cut where you scored them and enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- The baking tin I use for this recipe measures 27 x 20cm (10 x 8 inches) and is perfect for small batch flapjacks or brownies.
