If like me you love prawns then you will absolutely love these chilli ginger prawn fritters. The reason that I love this recipe so much, is that it includes many of my favourite ingredients. I love chilli flavours and I am a total sucker for anything ginger flavoured. Don’t even get me started on my love for king prawns. The recipe also includes spring onions which are one of the key flavours in these fritters.
These prawn fritters can be eaten any time of day but I love them to have them for lunch with a green salad. They are also perfect for a quick snack and they are very filling due to the high protein content. The prawn fritters go perfect with sweet chilli sauce and there are low carb versions of sweet chilli sauce which are just as good as high carb versions.
They are relatively low in carbs but the recipe does use a small amount of plain flour. Even with the plain flour the fritters only contain 1.2 grams of carbs each. I have tried the recipe with coconut flour and almond flour but they were not as nice and had an undesirable texture.
As well as being low carb the prawn fritters are also low in calories and contain 38 calories per fritter but you really won’t believe it when you taste them.
Ingredients for Prawn Fritters
- 235g king prawns - the main ingredient is prawns which should be king prawns. The recipe only works with raw king prawns.
- 1 teaspoon crushed chilli - I use dried crushed chilli flakes to avoid adding extra water to the mixture. You can use fresh chilli for garnish.
- 3 spring onions - adds lots of flavour to the fritters. You can also use finely chopped red onion instead.
- 1 small piece ginger - fresh grated ginger is best for this recipe and gives the fritters a gorgeous flavour.
- ½ teaspoon garlic purée - I use garlic purée so you get a garlic flavour without the solid pieces of garlic. You can also use garlic powder instead.
- 1 small carrot - grated carrots
- 2 tablespoon flour - helps to bind the ingredients.
- 1 medium egg – works with the flour to help the fritters bind together.
- 1 tablespoon lime juice - from a fresh lime.
- Salt and black pepper – these are optional ingredients and you can add to taste.
- 15ml oil - use any oil of choice. I use coconut oil for this recipe.
How to Make Prawn Fritters
1. Finely cut your prawns into small pieces then add them to a bowl along with the dried crushed chilli, spring onions, ginger, garlic puree and grated carrots.
2. In another small bowl mix together the flour, egg and lime juice. Once combined pour it onto the prawns and mix well. Add salt and black pepper if using and mix again.
3. Heat a frying pan with 2 tablespoon of oil on a medium heat, once heated add a tablespoon of the mixture to the pan and press flat. If you have space, you can cook a few at once.
4. Cook for 3 minutes then turn the fritters over and cook for another 3 minutes. Remove them from the pan and repeat this process until all the fritter mixture is used up.
5. Once cooled, they can be served immediately.
Recipe Tips
- Cut the prawns as small as possible to avoid the fritters breaking up when they are cooking.
- The fritters are very delicate so be gentle with them when cooking them.
- Another way to prevent them breaking is to ensure you keep them quite small. If they are too large, they may not hold together well.
