This recipe makes a small batch of oven baked crispy prawns or shrimp coated in panko breadcrumbs. These prawns are a slightly healthier alternative to regular crispy fried prawns and they’re equally delicious.

If you fancy some crispy prawns but don’t want to use lots of oil then try this tasty baked crispy panko shrimp recipe. The recipe makes crispy prawns that are crispy, succulent and so flavoursome. This recipe does use some oil but nowhere near as much as fried crispy prawns so they are definitely healthier.

How to Serve Baked Crispy Prawns (Shrimp)

These baked crispy prawns are perfect to serve as an appetiser/starter or as a party finger food for sharing. You can serve them with your favourite dip although they go perfectly with sweet chilli sauce or spicy mayonnaise. You can also add them to wraps, tacos or serve them with a side salad.

Ingredients for Baked Crispy Prawns (Shrimp)

Please find the full list of ingredients and quantities in the recipe card at the end of the post.

    • Oil – to oven bake crispy prawns or shrimp, you’ll still need some oil but not as much as for frying. Use any vegetable oil.
    • Prawns – use large raw jumbo prawns or shrimp.
    • Seasonings – to season the prawns, you’ll need salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika.
    • Flour – use plain flour or all-purpose flour.
    • Egg – you’ll need an egg to help the breading stick to the prawns or shrimp.
    • Breadcrumbs – I use panko breadcrumbs as they are light and crispy.
    • Coriander - or cilantro to garnish.

How to Make Baked Crispy Prawns (Shrimp)

    1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 7/425oF/220oC/200oC fan and line a baking tray with parchment paper. Spray or drizzle 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil onto the parchment paper, spread the oil around the tray with the back of a spoon and set the tray aside.

    2. Add the prawns to a bowl and season with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika. Rub the seasoning into the prawns then add in the plain flour and also rub into the prawns.

    3. Add the egg to a bowl and whisk until combined then add the panko breadcrumbs to another bowl.

    4. Take a prawn and dip it into the bowl with the egg ensuring it gets fully coated. Drain off any excess egg then dip the prawn into the panko breadcrumbs. Turn the prawn a few times in the breadcrumbs to fully coat and then place the prawn on the baking tray. Repeat the process until all prawns are breaded.

    5. Spray or drizzle 2 tablespoon oil onto all the breaded prawns and allow the prawns to sit for 10 minutes.

    6. After 10 minutes, bake the prawns in the top part of the oven for 14 minutes turning halfway through. If the prawns or shrimp are on the smaller side then 12 minutes will do.

    7. Remove the prawns from the oven and and allow to sit for 5 minutes then garnish with coriander and serve with your favourite sauce.
