    • This recipe is quick and you can have these hot honey prawns or shrimp ready in under 30 minutes.
    • Perfect for sharing or served as a main dish.

How To Serve Hot Honey Fried Prawns (Shrimp)

These hot honey fried prawns can be served in many different ways. As I stated they can be served as an appetiser, starter or a party food for sharing. They can be served as a main dish with a side dish such as rice or a salad. You can also serve them with some stir fried noodles and vegetables for a balanced meal. They even taste great in tacos or wraps with some fresh salad and some extra sauce.

Ingredients For Crispy Hot Honey Fried Prawn (Shrimp)

Please find the full list of ingredients and quantities in the recipe card at the end of the post.

    For the Shrimp
    • King prawns – use large jumbo king prawns or shrimp.
    • Seasonings – to season, you’ll need salt, black pepper, garlic granules, onion granules, paprika and cayenne pepper.
    • Flour – use plain flour also known as all-purpose flour for the crispy coating.
    • Cornflour – this is also known as corn-starch in some countries.
    • Egg – you’ll need one egg to help the flour bind to the prawns.
    • Mustard – I use Dijon mustard. American mustard works well too.
    • Hot sauce – use your favourite hot sauce. I use Cholula.
    • Vegetable oil – or any other unflavoured oil for cooking.
    For the Sauce
    • Butter – use any type of butter.
    • Hot sauce – use any hot sauce.
    • Honey – preferably, use runny honey.
    • Lime juice – squeezed from a fresh lime.
    • Chilli flakes – or crushed chillies.

How to Make Crispy Hot Honey Fried Shrimp

    Make the Crispy Prawns

    1. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and set aside. Add the prawns or shrimp to a bowl and season with the salt, black pepper, garlic granules, onion granules, paprika and cayenne pepper then rub the seasonings into the prawns. Add in the 1 tablespoon of plain flour and also rub it into the prawns. Set the prawns aside.

    2. To another bowl, add the 70g flour and cornflour, mix and also set aside. To another bowl, add in the egg, mustard and hot sauce then mix them together.

    3. Take a prawn and dip it into the egg ensuring it gets fully coated. Drain off any excess egg then dip it into the flour and turn a few times to fully coat. Once fully coated, place it on the baking tray. Repeat this process with the rest of the prawns then allow the prawns to sit at room temperature for 10 minutes.

    4. Place a large heavy duty pan or skillet on a medium to high heat and pour in the oil. Allow the oil to heat until slightly sizzling then place the prawns into the pan. Cook for 2 – 3 minutes then turn the prawns and cook for another 2 – 3 minutes. Cook until golden brown and cooked through. Remove the prawns with a slotted spoon and place on some kitchen towel to absorb the excess oil.

    Make the Sauce

    5. Add the butter, hot sauce, honey, lime and chilli flakes to a small saucepan and place on a medium to high heat. Stir the mixture while the butter melts then allow the sauce to heat until the it begins to bubble. Once bubbling, allow the sauce to remain on the heat for a further minute until it slightly thickens.

    6. Remove the sauce from the heat and set aside for a minute to slightly cool. Place the prawns on a serving plate then drizzle with the hot honey sauce. Allow to sit for 10 minutes then serve.

    Recipe Tips

    • This recipe serves around 3 – 4. You can easily double the recipe to make more servings.
    • Ensure the oil is hot enough before cooking. If you have a thermometer then the oil should be around 180oC/350oF.
    • Don’t overcrowd the pan and fry if batches if necessary.
