This recipe makes a simple classic French toast that is made using cream. Using cream in the recipe gives this French toast a lovely texture and flavour. This recipe is quick and easy so you can have this French toast ready in less than 20 minutes.

The cream used in this recipe is double cream also known as heavy cream which I find gives a richer flavour. The recipe also includes vanilla and cinnamon which makes this French toast extra delicious.

Serve this quick French toast with any topping of choice including butter, syrup or fresh fruit. This simple French toast also goes great with savoury food such as bacon or sausages. I usually make this recipe for breakfast or brunch over the weekend and it’s a treat my family always looks forward to.

    • Milk - I use whole milk for this recipe.
    • Cream - double cream or heavy cream.
    • Vanilla - use vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste.

How to Make Simple French toast

    1. Add the butter to a microwaveable bowl and melt in the microwave for 25 seconds or until it fully melts. Pour the oil into the bowl with the butter and mix. Set the bowl aside as this mixture will be used for cooking.

    2. To a shallow bowl, add and whisk the egg, milk, double cream, vanilla extract , cinnamon and caster sugar. Ensure the bowl is wide enough for the bread to lay flat.

    3. Place a frying pan on a medium heat and add some of the butter-oil mixture.  While it heats up, take a slice of the bread and lay it flat in the mixture but don’t allow the bread to become completely soaked through. Flip the bread and coat the other side in the mixture then place the bread in the pan. If your pan is large, you can cook 2 slices at once.

    4. Cook the French toast for 3 minutes then flip with a spatula and cook for another 3 minutes or until both sides are golden brown. Use the spatula to remove the French toast from the pan and repeat the process with the other 2 slices of bread. Serve with your favourite topping.
